Coronavirus and Malignant Hyperthermia

This is to clarify concerns regarding potential  risks that patients who are MH susceptible might experience concerning infection with the COVID-19 virus.  There is no evidence that there is increased risk for those who are MH susceptible who might experience the viral infection.

The underlying mechanisms for fever and other signs  related to the viral infection are different from those for MH susceptibility.

MH is a genetic disorder that affects muscle function through calcium release changes in skeletal muscle. This mechanism is different from the signs of infection with virus or bacteria.

There have been no studies relating the genetic changes of MH to viral infection.
