Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) is an inherited life threatening muscle disorder. MH is triggered in susceptible individuals by certain inhaled anesthetics commonly used during general anesthesia in hospitals, but also given in ambulatory surgical centers and office-based surgery suites where surgeries do not require an overnight stay.
MH is a silent killer and those that have the disorder are typically unaware. The public must be made aware of MH due to the number of surgical centers and suites using triggering anesthetics during cosmetic and other types of procedures.
The Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States is a small dynamic organization that provides awareness, education and training for patients and medical professionals. The MH Hotline is an example of one of the supported services. The MH Hotline is a 24-hour telephone service staffed by MH experts to help manage MH emergencies and is used by medical facilities in North America and the Military worldwide.
