My mother-in-law has MH and I was wondering what if any other meds can cause awake symtoms. Other than anesthetics. She has sweats, heart arrythmia, low potassium, headaches, swelling of her extremeties, and other issues. She's on a myriad of meds and has constant problems. Should it be advised also, that patients should tell their pharmacists that they have MH?

Christi,

Hello there. I’m not sure that I completely understand the intent of your posting. But let me give this a shot. As you’re probably aware, there are certain anesthetics that can trigger an MH event (symptoms of which may materialize either during surgery or shortly after the surgical procedure). That being said, I don’t know that I’ve ever run across any information correlating “MH Awake Symptoms” w/ any particular medications (anesthetics or otherwise).

I cannot speak to the etiology of the MH Awake Symptoms, for that matter, I’m not sure that anyone can. Some medical professionals in the MH community consider the Awake Symptoms suspect. I think the fact that the Awake Symptoms are listed on the MHAUS web page is an attempt to create a database of MH folks that are suffering from this identified list of symptoms….this is always a good first step.

Regarding the pharmacist, I think you can never go wrong sharing medical information w/ those responsible for providing medical care. However, that being said, it’s not likely that the pharmacist will have a working knowledge of Malignant Hyperthermia….many of them are not even informed regarding Dantrolene; so, typically then must look it up (this is simply because Dantrolene is so rarely dispensed by your local pharmacist).

Well, I’m not sure how helpful this info was…but I’d still encourage you to check out this anesthetic hyperlink:

Good luck to you and your mother-in-law.

Respectfully,

Steve
