The MHAUS temperature monitoring guidelines should conform to the American Society of Anesthesiologist' standard: "Every patient receiving anesthesia shall have temperature monitored when clinically significant changes in body temperature are intended, anticipated or suspected."

From: STANDARDS FOR BASIC ANESTHETIC MONITORING
Committee of Origin: Standards and Practice Parameters
(Approved by the ASA House of Delegates on October 21, 1986, and last amended on
October 20, 2010 with an effective date of July 1, 2011)

As I am sure you can imagine, this "Awake MH" really hits home for me and my family. Just in my research alone and now with the Central Core Disease group on Facebook, and the MHAUS Facebook site, there seem to be many others who do suffer some "awake" MH symptoms.

I have discussed another case with a mother whose son suffered "awake" symptoms and he was rushed to the hospital with severe muscle cramping and extremely high temperature, and thankfully for them, they cooled him sufficiently and hydrated him via IV. Unfortunately, we weren't that lucky.

I hope and pray the answers keep coming.

Thank you for all that you do.

I suggest the same guidelines (standards) that ASA has for temperature monitoring will be applied in MHAUS guidelines.

Julie Bailey Says:
Apr 20, 2010 at 6:54 PM I'm living proof of myth 10. I had masseter muscle rigidity following administration of succinylcholine throughout my 30 minute surgery, and for a time afterward. My surgical team did not recognize it as MH and did not monitor or treat me for MH. However, when I followed up several months later and got a genetic test, I did test positive for a mutation that is causative for MH.

Maribel Arrieta Says:
Mar 22, 2010 at 9:08 AM Good morning. Recently I had a case of a 3 year old girl who developed hyperthermia and hypercapnia during surgery. The first diagnosis i runned out was malignant hyperthermia and continued with the surgery, looking for another entities(I used the Larach´s points). I did it clinically(signs and arterial gases) in the OR. However I tested her for a CPK, who was low(276), but this result was given when the girl was at the ICU. One of my colleagues sais I had to wait for the result IN the OR, before continuing the surgery. She means it is a requisite to do a diagnosis of MH or to discard this diagnosis having the CPK levels IN the OR. I say MH is a clinical diagnosis and has to be done quickly. I want to know what do you think.
